Northeast Monsoon season which started early of November was a
wet period/rainy season for east coast states of Peninsular
Malaysia, the coastal region of Sarawak and east coast of Sabah.
During this season, generally those areas will experience
several episodes of widespread heavy rainfall lasting 2 to 3
days that can cause flood. Furthermore, the occurrence of
extreme monsoon surge that probably happen during the period can
cause widespread heavy rainfall to last till 8 days.
The continuous occurrences of heavy monsoonal rain
from 27 November 2008 to 1 December 2008 had caused severe
floods over Kelantan
(Jeli and
Kuala Krai), Terengganu (Marang, Hulu Terengganu, Setiu and
Besut) and Pahang (Temerloh, Kuala Lipis, Cameron Highlands and
Raub). Untill 1 December 2008, more than 6 thousands people from
those places were evacuated to more than 40 relief centres.
Water levels of major rivers in all three states have reached
the danger level thus worsen the flood situation. Moreover,
several minor landslides also reported in Marang, Terengganu
within the period.
Other than that, 3 men were reported missing on 29 November 2008
after their boat capsized in a storm at coastal areas of
Terengganu near Kuala Besut. The incident happened when the boat
was hit by huge wave as high as 4.5 m with strong wind of 50
km/h to 60 km/h.
